ASEAN University Network/Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (or AUN/SEED-Net) was officially established as a sub-network under the auspices of ASEAN University Network in April, 2001. The network has been implemented with the main support from the Japanese Government through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) together with academic and scientific research cooperation from Japanese supporting leading engineering universities over three phases of implementation and development since 2003, particularly 2003 – 2008, 2008 – 2013, and 2013 – 2018. The third phase started in March 2013 in accordance with the concluded agreement on 29th November, 2012 with signatures of the legal representatives of the relevant parties including the member country governments and universities in ASEAN and Japan. Up to present, the network has increased to 26 ASEAN member engineering universities and 14 Japanese supporting universities.

Since the establishment, over 800 master’s and doctoral degree scholarships have been awarded to young staff and students of ASEAN member universities. Importantly, the network has offered financial support for the implementation of collaborative research between ASEAN member universities and Japanese supporting universities with the objective of building up a partnership network of the engineering experts in ASEAN and Japan.
