Stakeholders Roundtable in Waste Management within GREENUS Project

 

On April 7, 2021, within the framework of the GREENUS Project (GREEN waste management new edUcation System for recycling and environmental protection in Asia), Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology organized a “Stakeholders Roundtable” to discuss the needs and issues related to developing academic programs in the field of waste management, environmental protection and recycling process to support the elaboration of GREENUS courses. The Roundtable was held in the blended form of offline and online participation receiving the registration of nearly 80 participants from public authorities, companies in environment as well as many lecturers and students of Vietnamese universities.

 

Representing Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Dr. Lai Quoc Dat, Director of External Relations Office conveyed sincere thanks to the participants and kicked of the Roundtable by starting his opening speech. “Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology is very excited to join the GREENUS Project. We are willing to cooperate with domestic & foreign universities and industrial partners to innovate our academic programmes and modernize teaching and learning methods in order to produce highly-qualified human resources to meet the needs of society “, said Dr. Dat.

At the Stakeholders Roundtable, Dr. Gabriella Calderari, Sapienza University of Rome, Coordinator of GREENUS Project also presented an overview of the project activities and work packages.

The Roundtable’s main session including 3 presentations (Waste management in Education Waste management in Public Sector and Waste Management in Industry/Private Sector) has drawn an overall picture of waste management situation in three important sectors for the society development.

After the main session, both online and on-site participants were arranged into smaller groups to join three parallel sessions: (1) Educational Sector, (2) Public Sector and (3) Industry. The discussion results will be concluded in the Matrix of GREENUS Project to support the design of courses in waste management.

GREENUS is a higher education capacity building project within the framework of the Erasmus + program funded by EACEA and implemented at HCMUT in the period of 2021-2024. The project consists of 8 member universities (3 European universities including Sapienza University of Rome – Italy, Hellenic Mediterranean University – Greece and Uniwersytet Jagiellonski W Krakowie – Poland; 3 Vietnamese universities: Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Can Tho University and two Myanmar universities: Yangon Technology University and Mandalay Technological University) working together to develop the technical capabilities of young generations in the field of solid waste management in Vietnam and Myanmar through enhancing the leading role of higher education institutions. The GREENUS Project’s specific objective is to establish six new interdisciplinary courses on waste management, environmental protection and recycling processes in 3 universities in Vietnam and 2 universities in Myanmar and tentatively integrate these courses into the academic programs at 5 universities to strengthen local capacity in management and waste recycling as well as the capacity of local laboratories to provide practical training in waste treatment to meet the market demands. The GREENUS courses will be based on an innovative approach that includes the respect of both European and local quality standards, the promotion of students and professors’ mobility, the internationalization of education and the promotion of the recycling culture.
