The celebration of the Vietnamese Teacher’s Day on 20 November and praise of the outstanding portraits during the 2015-2020 period took place at Meeting Hall A5 in the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) on the morning of 19 November 2020.
HCMUT President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mai Thanh Phong was giving his opening remarks on the Vietnamese Teacher’s Day of 20 November.
Attended the meeting were guests, representatives of Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City and other academic institutions, together with former leaderships, professors and lecturers over periods, the university council, organizations, as well as current staff and students.
A badge of 40-year service in the Vietnamese Communist Party was to Mr. Tran Van Ngu, a lecturer at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering.
Addressing the meeting, HCMUT President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mai Thanh Phong was giving his opening remarks celebrating the Vietnamese Teacher’s Day of 20 November. The President expressed his deep gratitude for many generations of lecturers who have made significant contributions to the training and education of the university. At the same time, the President also said sincere appreciation for leaderships and affiliates’ congratulations extended to the event.

In the last academic year, HCMUT gained many encouraging achievements, being a leading university nationwide in accreditation activities with 29 training programs, being recognized by prestigious international accreditation organizations. Notably, there was a successful renewal of the ABET-recognized two training programs, namely Computer Science and Computer Engineering, for six years until 30 September 2026. The number of international publications remained stable while local government cooperation and industry linkage became intensive, opening up new opportunities for the university’s development.

Amidst the unpredictable COVID-19 pandemic, HCMUT has conducted research, designing, and manufacturing products as preventions from the pandemic. Take some products as examples: portable disinfection chambers, simple machines for breathing supporting, non-contact antiseptic spray machines, air conduction masks, medical mask body makers, single-point ultrasonic straps, hand sanitizers, and so on. These products are results of collaborations in research and development and technology transfers among units inside the university, giving a bit of help in repelling the COVID-19 epidemic.

Furthermore, during the last academic year of 2019-2020, HCMUT first put the revised higher education law into practice and gained many achievements. HCMUT completed procedures of university council establishment, which was also approved by Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City. As planned, an autonomous operation mechanism for the university will come into effect in the next academic year of 2020-2021. In terms of training programs, HCMUT, in cooperation with a group of the seven leading engineering universities nationwide, started the development of a 180 credit curriculum for engineer training. The newly developed curriculum towards professional orientations adhering to international standards and practice, which allows undergraduates to have their academic performances be transferable between Bachelor and Master’s degree in Engineering. This strategic change is promising for the vigorous development of the university in the years to come.

On this occasion, HCMUT praised the collectives and individuals who have had outstanding achievements in the last academic year, particularly:
For the collectives,
– the title of “Emulation Flag” being awarded by the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training to the two units: the Personnel and Administrative Affairs Office and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
– The certificate of merit by the HCMUT President for eleven collectives.
For individuals,
– The Second Class Labour Medal: Assoc. Prof. Dr. and Elite teacher Nguyen Huu Loc – Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
– The Third Class Labour Medal: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Ky Phuong Ha – Head of the Personnel and Administrative Affairs Office
– The medal for education contribution: ten individuals
– the certificate of merit by the HCMUT President for forty-six individuals and eight outstanding young portraits, and ten outstanding students
At the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Minh Tam sent his best regards to different generations of HCMUT’slecturers and students. At the same time, he emphasized that HCMUT, as the largest and core member university, has had a long history and a prestigious training and scientific research center in the country, the region, and the world in the fields of science and technology. It has made many significant contributions to VNU-HCM in particular and the education sector of the country in general.

Facing the new requirements of development, VNU-HCM hoped that the collective of staff, lecturers, and employees of HCMUT will always promote solidarity, join forces, and work together to develop the university more strongly. Also, HCMUT will create favorable conditions for students who come from rural and remote areas and have many living hardships to strive more in their studies and scientific research.
