The AUN/SEED-Net was established in 2001 from the initiative derived at the ASEAN – Japan Summit as a framework toward sustainable development after the economic crisis that stroke the Asian region. Initially the Network comprises 19 leading engineering institutions in ASEAN and 11 supporting universities in Japan. These top universities cooperate in joint supervision of AUN/SEED-Net scholars, researches, program development, knowledge exchange and technology transfer. After its formal establishment in 2001, the JICA project to support AUN/SEED-Net has gone through 3 phases (2003-2008; 2008-2013; 2013-2018) with the objectives to activate internationally competitive personnel in leading engineering educational institutions in the region and to promote collaboration and solidarity between academics and professionals in the region. The phase 4 of the project has been started to implement since 2018 and will last till 2023. The Network now consists of 26 leading institutions from 10 ASEAN countries with the support of 14 leading Japanese Supporting Universities.
